EVOO + EVOO Centenarian + Honey + Saffron
This is the most recent harvest, harvested once a year from late fall into winter. The next one arrives in February–March. Read more
Four things, three places. Both oils from the Messara plain in Crete. Raw wild forest honey from Mount Olympus, never heated. And saffron from Herat, hand-picked by a women's cooperative — the one thing in our range that is not from Greece, and we would rather say so up front.

Health benefits
The EU allows olive oil one health claim, word for word: “Olive oil polyphenols contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress.”
It applies only above a measured line: at least 5 mg of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives per 20 g of oil, about 1½ tablespoons a day. The EVOO Centenarian in this set measures 10.6 mg. More than twice the line.
Polyphenols are the olive’s own antioxidants. Hydroxytyrosol and tyrosol are the ones the EU claim is about. Oleocanthal is the one that catches at the back of your throat. They make fresh oil bitter and peppery, and they fade as the oil ages, which is why the harvest date is printed on the bottle. This batch measures 548.9 mg/kg for the EVOO and 643.7 mg/kg for the EVOO Centenarian total polyphenols.
The rest is the fat itself. A tablespoon has 14 g of fat, 11 g of it monounsaturated, mostly oleic acid. In the U.S., the FDA allows this qualified claim: “Limited and not conclusive scientific evidence suggests that eating about 2 tablespoons (23 grams) of olive oil daily may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease due to the monounsaturated fat in olive oil. To achieve this possible benefit, olive oil is to replace a similar amount of saturated fat and not increase the total number of calories you eat in a day. One serving of this product contains 14 grams of olive oil.” See the nutrition facts for fat content.
Food, not medicine. A spoon a day is a habit, not a treatment.

The lab analysis
The EU olive oil health claim
Olive oil polyphenols contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress.
It is the one health claim the EU authorises for olive oil, and it has a line: at least 5 mg of hydroxytyrosol and its derivatives in 20 g of oil, about 1½ tablespoons, every day. The EVOO Centenarian in this set measures 10.6 mg. More than twice the line.
What it tastes like
Green almond in one, deep and round in the other. Then the catch.
The EVOO is green almond and artichoke. The EVOO Centenarian is deeper and rounder. Take either straight and you might cough. That's oleocanthal, one of the polyphenols, and it's the quickest check you can do yourself.

The five marks printed on every label

One number is not on the label: the polyphenolsThe polyphenols are measured per batch, in the lab, right after pressing. From that day on, they start to fade. Slowly in a sealed bottle, faster once it’s open. A number printed on the label would be true on the day of the test and a little less true every day after. We’d rather not print something that stops being accurate. So it lives in the analysis, published here, with the date on it.
